Byborre x Head Porter: Case Study

Fusing Time Honored Technique with Knit Innovation with the help of BYBORRE Create™

World-renowned Japanese accessory and luggage brand PORTER celebrated their 85th anniversary by creating a capsule of bags that remains in line with their brands' heritage while reimagining the possibilities of the modern bag with the help of BYBORRE’s platform, Create™. Paying homage to their parent company, Yoshida & Co, the project stays true to the core identity of the brand by picking their signature color range and utilising 6 of their most iconic styles.

BYBORRE’s Create™ platform was used to access the knowledge and materials needed to enable PORTER to drive forward the innovation of their brand's universe, pairing knitted technology alongside Porter's signature nylon. Together, a range of truly unique products was created, which bridges the gap between textile innovation and time-honoured craftsmanship.

Having used almost every kind of material known to mankind throughout the years, this project allowed PORTER to push the boundaries of their products with the help of the Valby 3D™ knit, a textile package that Create™ gives access to. By implementing their brand DNA into the textile itself and using iconic styles for the capsule, this not only meant that previous fans of the PORTER legacy would feel right at home, but it also broadened their horizons.

Having first met in 2019 at Paris Fashion week, it would be here that birthed the idea of the project. Following this, the PORTER team eventually approached BYBORRE for the 85th-anniversary capsule stating that “we've been collaborating with many different brands in anticipation of this anniversary, but we wanted to create a bag that was truly unique and would stand out next to other brands”. A bespoke knit used in conjunction with their known nylon would be a perfect way to reinvent what they do best, and the project was formed.

Meticulous about functionality and comfortability, a brand that holds as much weight against its name as PORTER meant it was crucial that these standards could be upkept, or even elevated. As knit is not traditionally used within bags, the material used needed to be durable enough to withstand everyday use, and tough enough to withstand the sewing process. Utilising Create™, the initial steps would first be to curate the textile packages needed to allow for this project to be achieved. PORTER states that during this process “BYBORRE were always on standby to help discuss and guide PORTER through the fabric selection.”

The capsule using BYBORRE textiles was launched on 15th January 2021 and has since been celebrated as “a conceptually strong product”, and “customers seem to be enjoying the bag very much”. Working together, both parties brought out the full potential of the fabric itself and by using Create™ the project was streamlined from initial brief to delivery; the outcome being a by-product of two professionals in their fields.

By experiencing Create™ and the benefits that it can provide, PORTER was able to tap into just a portion of the capabilities of the platform and stated “the material is very versatile and has the potential to not just be used for bags and clothing, but for furniture, car seats and other products in our daily lives”.
